New World Cup venue in Kandy to be named after Murali

The new International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele, Kandy which will be one of the venues to host matches of next year’s cricket world cup will be renamed as the Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium.

The Central Provincial Council in Kandy has taken this decision unanimously to honour the recently retired bowling world record holder whose home town is Kandy.

The decision had been taken on a proposal made by the Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.
The written proposal by Governor Kobbekaduwa had been tabled by Chairman Saliya Bandara Dissanayake at the council’s latest sitting.

Chairman Dissanayake had told the House that their decision will be intimated to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) shortly.
